Our Lady of Lourdes is a thriving parish in the heart of the Greenwood community. If you are new to the parish or have been a member here for many years, there are several opportunities for you to build your faith and grow in your devotion to Jesus Christ.
Along with the regular religious education, there are many opportunities for adult faith formation. Periodically, the parish offers Scripture studies and prayer groups throughout the year as well as during specific seasons of the Christian Year. In addition, there are many opportunities for you to be involved in parish ministry; please visit our parish ministry page for more information.
During Advent, we often have a Service of Lessons and Carols, with readings and hymnody that prepares us for the Feast of the Nativity (Christmas) with opportunities for Christmas caroling at local nursing homes. During Epiphany, the Blessing of Throats at the Feast of St. Blaise and the Blessing of Candles at Candlemas. There is an occasional Valentine's dinner and as Lent approaches, Mardis Gras pancakes are our last "Feast before the Fast," followed by Ash Wednesday. St. Patrick's Day is often celebrated with traditional corned beef and cabbage.
Throught Lent, the Stations of the Cross are offered (traditional and Taize services). Also, the Knights of Columbus host several Fish Fries on the Fridays of Lent. The Lenten journey comes to a close with Holy Week devotions, commeorating the death and resurrection of Christ. After the summer break, the parish picnic and Oktoberfest occur in the Fall.
Throughout the year, beginning in Advent, our parish little ones enjoy the Feast of St. Nicholas and during Lent/ Easter and Easter Egg Hunt. The youth (grades 1-6) participate in Vacation Bible School, an opportunity to grow deeper in their faith and be with other kids in their age group. In the Fall, the young ones get to dress up for our Halloween Booo Bash.
Middle School and High School youth have many opportunities to connect with their peers in youthgroup meetings throughout the school year as well as various retreats sponsored by the Diocese of Charleston. Such highlights in the year include the January Stand Up for Life Rally in Columbia, SC, and the High School Youth Retreat. The Diocese also sponsors the Middle and High school age Summer Camps as well leadership training opportunities. On many occasions, we have joined hundreds of other Christians for Carowinds Family Day during the Summer months and enjoyed Mass with the Bishop, as well as a huge picnic lunch!
In the October, the parish sponsors the local Stand Up for Life Rally in Greenwood. It is an opportunity to let your presence be known along Montague Ave. to prayerfully and quietly support a Culture of Life, from natural conception to natural death. Also, the Junior High Youth Retreat occurs in November.
The Women of the parish can join the Greenwood Catholic Women's Club, that has been organized since 1955. It is an opportunity to grow in your faith, experience educational opportunities from guest speakers and put your faith into action by community projects.
The Knights of Columbus are practical Catholic men, faithful to the Church’s teachings, supporting local parishes and being the “strong right arm” of our priests. As a fraternal organization, the Knights of Columbus are committed to supporting the families of God’s people in charitable ways. Beginning in the basement of St. Mary’s Parish in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus were founded in 1882 by Bl. Fr. Michael McGivney, an American priest, who exemplified amazing self-sacrifice to others.
CATHOLIC BOOK CLUB
